Volleyball Falls To Houston

Flowers records 1,000th career kill in the match.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis' Hannah Flowers reached a milestone and Kaitlyn Gehler etched her name in the Tigers record book on Friday, but Houston came away with the 3-1 American Athletic Conference victory.

Houston won the match by scores of 25-20, 25-19, 16-25 and 25-21. With the setback, the Tigers are now 16-11 overall and 5-10 in the league. The Cougars improve to 16-14 overall and 10-5 in the conference.

Flowers recorded the 1,000th kill of her career in Friday's final set, and she now has 1,001 career kills. She is the 25th Tiger in program history to reach the milestone. Flowers posted her 21st double-figures kills match of the season, including the last six in a row.

Gehler entered Friday's match needing eight digs to place her name in the top-10 among the program's season digs leaders. She collected 19 digs versus the Cougars and now has 431 on the season. The 431 digs are the ninth-most for a campaign in program history.

- Caitlin Schultz had a season-high 14 kills Friday for her fifth double-figures kills match of the season. It is her second double-digit kills performance in conference play in 2019.
- Meredith Wallace posted the ninth double-double of her career with 14 kills and 11 digs Friday. It also was her ninth double-double of the season.
- Sabrina Bianco recorded her 13th double-double of the season and 19th of her career with 46 assists and 14 digs Friday.
- Sabrina Bianco had 46 assists for her 18th 40-assists match of her career. Seventeen of her 18 40-assists performances have come this season.
- Sabrina Bianco added to her 1,000-assists season Friday and now has 1,101 helpers in 2019.
- Friday's match (19 digs) was the 39th double-figures digs match of Gehler's career and her 21st of the season. Gehler has posted double-digit digs in 19 of the Tigers' last 20 matches.

First Set
- Memphis grabbed the early 3-0 lead on kills from Meredith Wallace and Hannah Flowers and an ace from Sabrina Bianco.
- The Tigers held an 11-9 advantage when Houston made its move.
- The Cougars went on a 7-1 run for a 16-12 lead.
- Memphis fought back to within two at 19-17 on a Jada Birkel kill.
- Houston, though, had the final answer with a 6-3 run for the 25-20 final.
Second Set
- The Cougars jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead and led for most of the first half of the set.
- Memphis clawed back in and tied the set at 11-all on a Houston error.
- The Tigers grabbed a 13-12 lead on another Cougars error, and a Caitlin Schultz kill gave Memphis a 14-12 advantage.
- Memphis led 16-14 when the Cougars made a run.
- Houston put together a 9-2 spurt for a 23-18 lead.
- The Cougars won the set 25-19.
Third Set
- The Tigers rebounded with a quick 2-0 lead and never trailed in the set.
- Leading 8-7, Memphis went on a 6-1 run for a 14-8 lead and some breathing room.
- The Tigers got kills from Wallace (2) and Andrea O'Connor (1) in the spurt.
- Memphis stretched its lead to 23-14 before closing the set on a Flowers kill for the 25-16 win.
Fourth Set
- Houston took an early 3-1 lead, but Memphis tied the set at 3-all off two Cougars' errors.
- The set was tied four times over the next eight points, the last at 7-all.
- Houston then went on a 6-1 spurt to take a 13-8 lead.
- Memphis did not fold and responded with a 6-1 run to tie the set at 14-all.
- Kills from Flowers (2) and Sabria Cooper (1) ignited the spurt.
- The set was tied at 16-all when Houston made its final push.
- The Cougars put together a 5-0 run to take a 21-16 advantage.
- Memphis attempted to answer as two Flowers kills – the first her 1,000thcareer kill – cut the Houston lead to three twice at 23-20 and 24-21.
- The Cougars took the next point for the 25-21 set win and 3-1 match victory.
