UofM begins three-game homestand at 1 p.m. Saturday
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Four days after playing its first game away from FedExForum, the 13th-ranked University of Memphis men's basketball team returns home for its opener in the Barclays Center Classic.
Saturday's opponent will be Alcorn State (1-2). Tipoff is 1 p.m.
The Tigers (2-1) will be playing for the first time since dropping an 82-74 decision Tuesday to 14th-ranked Oregon in the Phil Knight Invitational in Portland. Lester Quinones led the UofM with 16 points and was one of four Tigers who finished in double figures.
Against Alcorn State, the Tigers will look to recover from a poor shooting night against the Ducks. Memphis entered the game shooting 56.7 percent after victories over South Carolina State and UIC, but was held to 38 percent shooting. The Tigers were only 4-of-23 from beyond the arc, which is at its new distance – 22 feet, 1¾ inches – this season.
"Going 4-of-23 from 3 is just not us," said Tigers coach Penny Hardaway. "(Oregon) did a great job of running 3-point shooters off the line and they contested very well and we still took those tough shots. Next time, (we'll) handle it better."
The UofM outrebounded Oregon, 41-39, and committed five fewer turnovers, but poor shooting was its undoing.
Hardaway was impressed with Quinones, a freshman guard from New York.
While he struggled shooting, he made some big shots and displayed other strengths, finished with four assists, two steals and two rebounds. He made each of his six free-throw attempts.
"He did a great job of playing more than a 3-point game," Hardaway said. "He was 2-of-9 from 3, but he still got to the basket and got offensive rebounds and did other things well. It wasn't his best shooting night, but you could tell he was competing the whole night, so I'm proud of him and Damion (Baugh) for getting in there and scrapping and getting into the fight."
The Alcorn State begins a stretch of three straight home games for the Tigers, who play Little Rock Wednesday and Ole Miss on Nov. 23.
"I think we're in good spirits," Hardaway said. "We turned (Oregon) over 18 times and that's with veteran guards. I think that's pretty good for (our) freshmen and sophomores. We're not making any excuses. We have to get better. We have to learn from games like (Oregon)."
