Lembo Named a Nominee for Broyles Award
Nov 13, 2019 | Football
MEMPHIS – Memphis special teams coordinator Pete Lembo was named one of 41 nominees for the 2019 Broyles Award, Wednesday. The Broyles Award honors college football's top assistant coach each year.

Lembo is in his first season as Memphis' special teams coordinator and assistant head coach.

Per ESPN, Memphis ranks first nationally in special teams efficiency with an 85.1 rating. Special teams efficiency measure a unit's per-play contribution to a team's scoring margin.

Memphis has recorded two kick return touchdowns (Gabe Rogers, Antonio Gibson) and now has 10 kick return touchdowns in four seasons, leading the country. As a team, Memphis ranks fourth nationally in kickoff returns with 27.82 yards per return.

Punter Adam Williams is averaging 46.2 yards per punt in 2019. His 3.1 punts per game average is just short of the 3.6 required to be in the NCAA national rankings, but would rank ninth nationally if he met the punt minimum requirement.

Junior place kicker Riley Patterson is coming into the game at Houston off his first career AAC Special Teams Player of the Week honor. Patterson tied a Memphis single game record with 18 points kicking in the win over #15/14 SMU in Memphis' last game and his 293 career points ranks third in Memphis history. He has connected on three field goals of 50 or more yards, including two this season.

In addition to Lembo, there are two other candidates on the list with Memphis ties. Former assistant coach Dan Lanning (Georgia) and former offensive coordinator Will Hall (Tulane) are also on the list of 41 candidates.

A 20-member selection committee will select the 15 semifinalists and five finalists from the overall list. The finalists will be invited to the 2019 Broyles Award Dinner in Little Rock on December 10. Proceeds from the 2019 Broyles Award support the Broyles Foundation, to provide a game plan through education, support and resources for Alzheimer's caregivers.
