Freshman posted third consecutive 100-yard plus rushing game in road win Saturday.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After setting the freshman single game rushing record and posting his third consecutive 100-yard rushing game of the season, redshirt freshman running back Kenneth Gainwell was named to the American Athletic Conference's weekly honor roll, Monday.
Gainwell leads the American Athletic Conference with 124.0 yards per game rushing and with 151.8 all-purpose yards a contest. The Yazoo City, Mississippi, native rushed for 209 yards on 14 carries in a 52-33 win at UL Monroe Saturday to help Memphis to a 5-0 record. Gainwell tallied a pair of rushing touchdowns in the win, giving him six through five games this season, not counting a receiving touchdown against Southern in game two.
Gainwell is one of two Memphis freshmen to record three 100-yard rushing games. Only he and DeAngelo Williams have had three 100-yard rushing games in a freshman campaign (Williams had four) and Gainwell's 209-yard game was the first for a Tigers freshman back since Larry Porter in 1990.
The Tigers' win at UL Monroe marked the end to non-conference play for the 2019 season and the team plays two of the next three games away from the friendly confines of Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. First up is a Saturday morning contest at Temple at 11 a.m. CT. That game will air on ESPN2.
Memphis plays its only home game of October next weekend, hosting West Division foe Tulane on October 19th. Game time for that contest could be announced later today. Tickets for the game are on sale at www.GoTigersGoTix.com.
