Men's tennis closes strong ITA Regional Championship outing with semifinal appearances

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – In one of its best fall tournament performances, Memphis men's tennis closed a strong showing at the 2019 ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships with a pair of semifinal appearances in the main draw of singles and doubles action.
Freshman James Story represented the Tigers in the semifinal round of singles, while All-Conference duo Oscar Cutting and David Stevenson closed their solid doubles run in the semifinal round.
In singles, Memphis had the most representatives of any school in the Round of 32, Round of 16 and quarterfinals. Overall, the five Tigers made a trip to the Round of 32 in singles, while four advanced to the Round of 16 and two punched their ticket for quarterfinal appearances.
Story and Jeremy Taylor each claimed two wins on Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals. Taylor's day began with a thrilling three-set victory in the Round of 32. After claiming the first set, Taylor erased a 0-6, 0-5 deficit in the following two frames to complete the tiebreak comeback. Story added one more singles win on Sunday before falling in semifinal action.
In doubles, the tournament's No. 2 seed of Cutting and Stevenson collected three wins throughout the weekend before their run was ended in a three-set bout in the semifinal round.
The squad will return to action this weekend, joining Louisville, Minnesota and Florida Gulf Coast at the annual Finemark FGCU Collegiate Open.
