Men's Cross Country Up To No. 10 In Poll
Oct 22, 2019 | Men's Cross Country
Tigers' highest regional ranking since 2012.
NEW ORLEANS, La. – The University of Memphis men's cross country squad climbed three spots in the latest U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) South Region poll, which was released late Monday. The Tigers jumped up from No. 13 to No. 10.
The No. 10 USTFCCCA South Region ranking is the highest since the Tigers finished ninth in 2012. The No. 10 ranking is the second-highest, regular-season regional ranking in program history. That same 2012 squad was No. 9 in the next-to-last regular-season poll.
Memphis' three-spot jump tied for the second-largest move in the USTFCCCA South Region poll. In the Oct. 7 poll, the Tigers were the only team to climb into the region's poll after being unranked in the previous poll.
Â
The Tigers are one of five American Athletic Conference programs ranked among the USTFCCCA's nine regional polls.
The Tigers keep moving up in the polls as a result of their solid performances in the last two outings. Memphis placed third out of 24 teams in last Friday's UAB Blazer Classic and only finished behind regionally-ranked Charlotte and Belmont. Eight Tigers set personal-best 8k times in the Oct. 18 Blazer Classic.
Â
In the Oct. 5 Greater Louisville Classic, Memphis placed eighth out of 41 teams and finished ahead of three regionally-ranked teams in Bowling Green, Kentucky and Vanderbilt. Seven of the 10 Tigers runners set 8k personal-bests in the Classic's Gold Race, which annually is the event's most-competitive race.
This is second-straight season the Tigers have earned a USTFCCCA regional ranking. In 2018, Memphis was ranked four weeks and climbed as high as No. 11 in the South Region poll. The Tigers finished No. 15 in last year's final regional rankings.

Memphis is off from competition this week, but returns to action Nov. 1 when the Tigers host the American Athletic Conference Championships at Shelby Farms Park in east Memphis.
