UofM finishes third at Quail Valley, but establishes four team records in the process
VERO BEACH, Fla. – The University of Memphis men's golf finished third in the Quail Valley Intercollegiate that ended Monday, but the Tigers re-wrote the program's record book in the process.
Â
Freshman Phuripon Namkang and senior Rodi Vlasveld each shot final-round 5-under 67s Monday to help the UofM fire a record-setting round of 271 for a three-round total of 824 (also a record). Additionally, the Tigers established records for low round vs. par (-17) and low 36 holes (553).
Â
For the tournament, Memphis shot 40-under par, three shots behind champion Notre Dame (821) and two shots behind USF (822).
Â
"The boys did a really good job, it was a total team effort not counting a single round over part and not even shooting a single round over par," said Tigers coach Blake Smart. "Even our drop scores (lowest of the five participants) were all even or under par.
Â
"I'm really proud of the team effort. We competed hard all day long and had a chance until the very end. That's probably our best result in my time here during the regular season."
Â
Namkang and Vlasveld tied for ninth place individually at 9-under 207, while the UofM's three other participants – Guillaume Chevalier, William Harwood and Isaiah Jackson – finished one stroke back at 8-under 208. Chevalier closed with a 4-under 68, Harwood fired a 69 and Jackson shot even-par 72.
Â
For the Tigers, it was their third top-5 finish in as many events. They opened the fall season in late-September at the Graeme McDowell Invitational (5th of 19 teams) and played the David Toms Intercollegiate (2nd of 12 teams) two weeks ago.
Â
The Tigers resume their fall season with a trip Oct. 28 and 29 to the Intercollegiate at Innisbrook at Palm Harbor, Fla., and close the fall portion with the East Bay Deli Classic in Kiawah Island, S.C.
Â
"I'm looking forward to the final two (events) and seeing what these guys can continue to do," Smart said. "I think it has the potential to be a really good squad, but there's still a lot of work to do and a lot of things to clean up."
