Shares honor with SMU quarterback Shane Buechele
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Redshirt freshman running back Kenneth Gainwell is sharing American Athletic Conference co-Offensive Player of the Week honors after becoming the first player at the FBS level since 1997 to record a game of 200-plus yards receiving and 100-plus yards rushing. Gainwell shares this week's award with SMU quarterback Shane Buechele, who passed for 457 yards and six touchdowns in a win over #25 Temple.
Gainwell's 307 all-purpose yards from Saturday's win over Tulane has helped him rank second in the nation with 1,270 all-purpose yards. Gainwell also extended his consecutive 100-yard rushing game streak to five games. He is the first Memphis freshman to have five 100-yard rushing games in a season and has now tied teammate Patrick Taylor's mark of five consecutive 100-yard rushing games (Taylor played in the Tigers' season opener but has missed the last six games due to injury). The last Tiger to have five consecutive 100-yard rushing games in a season was Darrell Henderson in 2017.
This is the third straight week Gainwell has earned an honor from the American, but this is his first Player of the Week award. Gainwell, who enters Saturday's contest at Tulsa with 830 rushing yards on 113 carries, ranks second in American Athletic Conference history in freshman season rushing yards, trailing USF's Marlon Mack (2015) by just 211 yards. He is the first Tiger to earn offensive player of the week honors from the AAC since Darrell Henderson was honored on Sept. 17th of last season.
Memphis returns to the road this weekend, playing at Tulsa on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. That game will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
