Rifle Drops Narrow Decision To Navy

Tigers post match's top-three aggregate scores, sweep both discipline titles.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – University of Memphis' Levi Clark, David Crenshaw and Taylor Gibson swept the top-three aggregate spots in the match, but Navy came away with a narrow 4664-4662 Great America Rifle Conference victory Saturday.

The No. 13 nationally-ranked Tigers won smallbore by a 2309-2302 score. Navy, ranked No. 7 nationally, bounced back in air rifle with a 2362-2353 win.

Clark had the match's top aggregate score at 1173, with Crenshaw second at 1169 and Gibson third at 1168.

Memphis also swept the top spot in each discipline. Crenshaw won smallbore with a 582 score, and Clark took air rifle with a 595.

Memphis returns to action Oct. 27 when the Tigers host Great America Rifle Conference foe Army West Point. The match is set to take place at the R.F. Fogelman Rifle Range on the University of Memphis campus.

Tigers Tidbits

David Crenshaw had a career day across the board in Saturday's match versus Navy. The sophomore posted career-bests in both disciplines (582 SB/587 AR) and aggregate (1169). His previous-highs in smallbore (578) and aggregate (1158) came against Army in 2018-19. His previous career-best in air rifle was 585 at last year's Gamecock Invitational at Jacksonville State.
Levi Clark shot an aggregate of 1173 against Navy Saturday. It was the eighth time in his career he posted a score of 1170 or higher, including both matches in 2019-20.
Levi Clark won air rifle with a career-best 595 score. His previous career-best in the discipline was 594 against Kentucky in 2018-19.
Levi Clark's 595 air rifle score was one shy of tying the school record in the discipline. The 596 school record is held by two of Clark's former teammates, Haylea Broughton and Leighton Dempster.
Mark Meyeraan continued his solid start in 2019-20. In the season opener three weeks ago, he tied his career-high in air rifle (582). Against Navy Saturday, Meyeraan set career-bests in smallbore (576) and aggregate (1158). His previous smallbore best was 574 in the 2018 Tiger Open versus Navy, and his previous aggregate high was 1145 in the 2019-20 regular-season finale versus Ole Miss.
Freshman Taylor Gibson continued her great start in her first collegiate season. After posting a 1167 aggregate in the season opener, she did one better Saturday with a 1168. She improved her smallbore score by two points from the season opener (579 vs. UT Martin/581 vs. Navy).
