Life skills program gears up for another busy spring calendar.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis PAWS (Preparing Athletes for Winning Success) Program is prepping for another Tigers Go Pro spring series to help Memphis student-athletes in preparation for post-college plans.
In February and March, the PAWS program will host seven seminars four times a week to help student-athletes prepare for professional and internship plans. On Monday, February 4, the spring program kicks off with an opportunity learn about resumes and what recruiters and human resources personnel are looking for.
On Monday, Feb. 11, the Tigers' weekly series will focus on the elevator pitch – where student-athletes will learn how to sell themselves and their experiences to recruiters and future employers. The following week, interview preparation will be the focus of the four weekly opportunities.
In March, the four sessions will be recruiter roundtables, where local businesses come in and talk about what they are looking for in their respective hiring processes. The following week, the sessions move to networking and learning how to use who you know to help you get that first interview. The second-to-last sessions focus on LinkedIn and seeing how the online technology can help you find contacts in businesses that are hiring.
The seven-week session wraps up on Monday, April 1 with sessions on financial responsibility, teaching Tigers how to look for that first apartment, handle credit, and budget for success.
Local businesses wanting to participate in any of the sessions can contact Katie Woodruff, the Coordinator of the Memphis Student-Athlete Development Program, at krwdruff@memphis.eduor at 901-678-2738.
The Tigers' Student-Athlete Development Program includes the Tigers Go Pro sessions each week, Mental Health Awareness events, including a Feb. 25thpanel during AAC Mental Health Awareness Week, Habitudes sessions (teaching leadership habits using images) and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), which meets monthly to allow student-athletes a voice in department protocols and offers the Tigers' administration an opportunity for student-athlete feedback on various legislative pieces.
