MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis Athletics received a $2.4 million commitment that will support the department's Time to Shine campaign, men's and women's golf and student-athletes' medical wellness, athletic director Tom Bowen announced Thursday.
The anonymous gift is the third-largest commitment in Memphis Athletics history, with the two previous largest occurring during the Time to Shine campaign.
"We are incredibly grateful for this transformative gift that will support multiple sports programs and overall student-athlete welfare," said Bowen. "I am confident that this leadership gift will inspire others to give in similar ways to support our student-athletes."
The gift for men's and women's golf will assist in renovations of the Frank L. Flautt Golf Center and enhance other areas of the University's Park Avenue athletics facilities and will support sports medicine by adding state-of-the-art medical equipment that will benefit all student-athletes. In addition, the gift will provide transportation vehicles, including a Memphis Athletics RV that multiple programs can use in recruiting and short team trips within the region. Sports medicine also will utilize the new vehicles.
The generous contribution marks the 13thseven-figure commitment during the Time to Shine campaign, including an eight-figure gift of $10 million – the largest in the department's history – from Bill and Nancy Laurie to name the Laurie-Walton Family Basketball Center. The second-largest commitment came from the Helen and Jabie Hardin Family Charitable Trust.
