MEMPHIS, Tenn. – In the fourth round of the 2019 Major League Soccer Superdraft, the Portland Timbers of the MLS selected David Zalzman, who finished his senior season with the Tigers in 2018.
Zalzman wrapped up his Memphis career with a four goal season, including two penalty kicks. The Maracay, Venezuela native led the Tigers to their first American Athletic Conference Championship win, defeating USF in the quarterfinal round. He was named First-Team All-AAC for his success on the pitch.
In 2017, Zalzman was named Second-Team All-AAC after leading the Tigers with two goals and three assists, totaling seven points.
"Congrats to David, he's worked extremely hard for this the last four years, and an opportunity like this is all you can ask for," head coach Richard Mulrooney said of the selection. "I'm sure he'll make the best of it. We're all proud of him and we'll be following his career."
With the selection, Zalzman became the first Tiger to be drafted into the MLS since Mark Sherrod was drafted by the Houston Dynamo in 2014.
"This shows that anyone can go to a four-year school, earn a degree and still have an opportunity to play professionally," Mulrooney said. "I'm pleased to be able to say that Memphis is a place that this can happen, and I think this speaks highly of the type of program we have here."
The midfielder joins a Portland Timbers squad that finished fifth in the Western Conference, ending the season 15-10-9. The Timbers then went on to finish as runners-up to Atlanta United, falling in the MLS Cup 2-0.
