Women’s Basketball Announces Non-Conference Schedule

Six post season teams and a month-long December homestead highlight non-conference schedule.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Six teams that went to the postseason last March and a month-long December homestand highlight the University of Memphis women's basketball non-conference schedule announced by head coach Melissa McFerrin Thursday.
"With some of the unproven things with our roster, it's going to be important that we have an opportunity to get good looks at a lot of our players," said McFerrin, who enters her 11thseason at the helm of the Tigers. "We've put together a non-conference schedule that will challenge us, but also will give us an opportunity to place kids in positions and put combinations together to see what fits best in terms of our personality and style of play.
"We're excited about a couple of our trips. We're excited about going to Myrtle Beach. Of course, we're telling the players it's not spring break. We also travel to George Washington, which is our last game before the conference season begins. We have Little Rock coming to us, and that's another high-level team. We have the right mix of competition to help our young team grow and mature."
Of the six 2018 postseason teams, Mercer, Little Rock and George Washington earned NCAA Tournament bids, while UAB, Louisiana Tech and Toledo were WNIT participants. The Tigers will play Louisiana Tech, Toledo and Little Rock in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
Memphis will open its season Nov. 7 against Jackson State, a team it upended 64-53 last season. The team then will embark on a two-game regional road swing, playing at Arkansas State Nov. 12 and UAB Nov. 15.
Memphis will return home to host Louisiana Tech Nov. 18, before traveling to Coastal Carolina for a two-game tournament over the Thanksgiving holiday. Memphis will open tournament play Nov. 23 against defending Southern Conference champion Mercer, which went 30-3 last year. The team will close the event against host Coastal Carolina Nov. 25.
In December, Memphis hosts six games around final exams and the holidays. Memphis will play Toledo, which advanced to the WNIT second round last year, on Dec. 1. Three days later (Dec. 4), Memphis will welcome New Orleans, followed by a Dec. 9 date against Samford.
After a break for final exams, the Tigers will return to the Elma Roane Fieldhouse Dec. 17 vs. Southeast Missouri. Memphis will face defending Sun Belt champion Little Rock, in its final pre-holiday game on Dec. 21.
Memphis will close the month-long homestand Dec. 29 against North Carolina Central, before wrapping up non-conference play on the road at 2018 NCAA Tournament participant George Washington Jan. 1.
Memphis will host one exhibition game in the preseason, facing crosstown foe LeMoyne-Owen Nov. 3.
