Tigers Drop Result to UConn
Sep 28, 2018 | Men's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The men's soccer team dropped a tough match to the UConn Huskies 2-0 Friday night. Memphis gave up a goal in the opening minutes of the second half to break the first-half stalemate.
The opening period saw both teams with opportunities throughout, with Memphis outshooting the Huskies 6-4. However, neither team was able to claim a lead in the first. The Huskies were aggressive from the opening whistle, firing off multiple shots in the first 15 minutes.
The Tigers regained their composure in in the middle of the half, controlling the offense and responding with their own shots, but like UConn, found themselves without a goal.
Shots from Memphis saw the first half to a close, but after 45 minutes, the teams were deadlocked with nothing to show.
"I thought we put the effort in tonight," Head coach Richard Mulrooney said of the first half. I thought we started the game off well, we knew how Connecticut was going to play, and we stuck to the game plan."
As the second period opened, the Tigers gave up the goal that broke the tie. Dayonn Harris scored what would prove to be the game-winner as his second goal of the season.
Memphis sought a response through the second half, driving into UConn territory, but through the middle portion of the half, were unable to get many quality opportunities.
As the half wore on, Memphis amped up the intensity, making run after run into the teeth of the UConn defense, taking several shots within the 18-yard box. None of them fell through for the Tigers, however.
"I think that first goal was a gut-check for us. I don't think we recovered from it well, and I think it gave them a ton of confidence," Mulrooney said of the first goal. "We've got to learn from the adversity and stick together."
The Huskies added an insurance goal with seconds left in the match, taking the win 2-0.
Memphis will hit the road for its next match, taking on the Owls of Temple University in Philadelphia. Match time is scheduled for 6 p.m., CT.
