Bawden, Harris post top 25 finishes individually
LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The University of Memphis struggled on the final day of The Windon Memorial Golf Classic at The Knollwood Club outside Chicago and finished 10th in the 16-team field.
Â
Marquette won the event by shooting 4-under 284 Tuesday to finish at 4-under 860, two strokes ahead of second-round leader Michigan State (862). Iowa State (868), North Illinois (870) and Michigan (871) rounded out the top five. Defending champion Northwestern, the tournament host, finished ninth at 878.
Â
Memphis, which closed strong at its home tournament last week to finish second, was unable to reproduce the effort. No Tigers broke par and, as a result, the UofM slipped from fifth place entering the final round. The UofM shot 15-over 303 Tuesday.
"I'm really disappointed in our final round after putting ourselves in a great position through two rounds," said Memphis coach Blake Smart. "We were there. We have the ability to play with really good teams, but we have to get stronger mentally and get over the hump."
Â
For the second straight tournament, Bradley Bawden, a native of England, paced the Tigers. He shot 2-over 74 to finish at 1-over 217 in the 54-hole event.
Â
Other Tigers participating in the tournament were Chase Harris, who shot 75 for a total of 3-over 219; Isaiah Jackson (78-225); Rodi Vlasveld (76-225) and Landon Carner (78-229).
Â
Thomas Hutchison of UC Davis was the medalist. He shot a tournament record-tying 11-under 205. He was one of only six golfers in the 92-player field to shoot in the 60s Tuesday.
Â
Memphis participates next at The Grove Intercollegiate Oct. 7-9 at College Grove, Tenn. Middle Tennessee State will host the tournament.
Â
"We will evaluate our performance and spend a few weeks working at it before The Grove," Smart said.
