Volleyball Drops 3-0 Decision At Wichita State

Murrihy posts fourth double-double of the season in Sunday's setback.
WICHITA, Kan. – University of Memphis' Molly Murrihy posted a double-double, but Wichita State came away with a 3-0 victory American Athletic Conference victory Sunday.

The Shockers won the match by scores of 25-18, 25-21 and 26-24. Memphis falls to 7-7 overall and 0-2 in the conference. Wichita State improves to 7-6 overall and 2-0 in The American.

The Tigers return home to the Elma Roane Fieldhouse Sept. 28-30 for their American Athletic Conference home-opening weekend. Memphis faces USF Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. (CT) and then hosts UCF Sept. 30 at 12 p.m. (CT).

Murrihy had 27 assists and 16 digs for her fourth double-double performance of the season. Her 16 digs were a career-high. She has logged double-digit assists in each of her 14 starts.

"We went out and worked hard to put ourselves in a position to win sets this afternoon, but didn't convert some key points. We were limited a little by some injuries this weekend, but the players still stepped up and put us in scoring opportunities. We have some things to work on this week, as we get back in the gym to prepare for USF and UCF."

- Hannah Flowers had her 11th-straight, double-figure kills match this season with 14 kills versus Wichita State.
- The double-figures kills match was Flowers' 24thof her career.
- Kelsea Bivins posted the 20thdouble-figures kills match of her career against Wichita State with her 10 kills.
- With her 19 digs Sunday, Mady Ruhlman notched her 51stmatch with double-digit digs. It is her fifth match this season with double-figures digs.
- Ruhlman's 19 digs against the Shockers were a season-high. The 19 digs were the most for Ruhlman since she had 20 versus Cincinnati last season (Oct. 22, 2017).

Set One
- Unlike their Friday match where they trailed early, the Tigers jumped out to a 6-2 advantage against the Shockers.
- Hannah Flowers downed four kills, and Kelsey Walter added two service aces to account for all six Memphis points in the spurt.
- Memphis maintained its lead until 11-9 on Flowers' six kill of the set.
- Wichita State, though, used a 5-2 surge to take a 14-12 lead and did not trail the remainder of the set.
- The Shockers steadily stretched out their lead to 21-17.
- Wichita State took the opening set by a 25-18 count.
Set Two
- The set was back-and-forth in the opening 24 points with eight ties, the last coming at 12-all.
- Walter had three kills to help the Tigers stay within striking distance.
- The Shockers put together a 5-1 run to take the lead for good at 17-13.
- A Flowers kill and two Wichita State errors pulled Memphis to within two at 18-16.
- The Shockers held off the Tigers' surge and used a 7-5 run to close the second set with a 25-21 win.
Set Three
- The Tigers held a lead the first portion of the third set and pulled out to a 10-7 advantage on a Kelsea Bivins-Martina Faietti block.
- Bivins added two kills early.
- Bivins continued her hot offensive streak with two more kills to help Memphis gain a 14-12 lead.
- The Shockers made a push with a 6-2 run to regain the advantage at 18-16.
- Wichita State held set and match point on its serve at 24-21, but three-straight points from the Tigers knotted the score at 24-all.
- Flowers accounted for two of the three points in the run on her 13thand 14thkills of the match.
- The Shockers ended the match with consecutive kills for the 26-24 set win and 3-0 match victory.
