Volleyball Drops Decision To Central Arkansas

Walter has career-high 10 blocks in the setback.
MARTIN, Tenn. – University of Memphis' Kelsea Bivins had a match-high 12 kills and Kelsey Walter logged a career-high 10 total blocks in the Tigers' 3-0 setback to Central Arkansas in UT Martin's Skyhawk Invitational Saturday. The match was the first of two on the day for the Tigers.
Central Arkansas won the match by scores of 25-18, 27-25 and 25-22. With the loss, Memphis drops to 2-5. The Sugar Bears improve to 4-2.
Bivins 12 kills in Saturday's first match came on the heels of her career-high 21 kills in Friday night's match against UT Martin. Walter's 10 total blocks bettered her previous career best of seven against Arkansas State Aug. 25. Walter also registered a career-high 10 kills versus UT Martin in Friday's late match.
Memphis wraps up play in the Skyhawk Invitational later Saturday afternoon. The Tigers face UAB at 5 p.m. (CT).

Set One
- Memphis jumped out to a 4-2 lead on the strength of two Kelsey Walter blocks and one Kelsea Bivins kill.
- Central Arkansas answered with an 8-0 run to take a 10-4 advantage. The Sugar Bears did not trail the remainder of the set.
- The Tigers did not fold.
- A 7-4 Memphis spurt cut the Central Arkansas lead to 14-11.
- Anna Palmer and Sarah Marlatt each had two kills in the run.
- Memphis continued its surge with another 7-4 spurt to tie the set at 18-all.
- Kills from Palmer, Bivins and Hannah Flowers helped the Tigers pull into a tie with Central Arkansas.
- The Sugar Bears, however, closed strong with a 7-0 run to take the opening set 25-18.
Set Two
- The second set was the most competitive of the three with 13 ties and five lead changes.
- Memphis grabbed an early 5-2 lead and maintained its advantage up to 9-8.
- Bivins, Flowers and Meredith Wallace collected kills in the spurt.
- Central Arkansas then used a 3-0 to take an 11-9 lead.
- The Tigers answered back, and over the next 10 points, the set was tied five times.
- The Sugar Bears then went on a 4-0 run to grab a 19-15 advantage.
- The Tigers responded with an 8-2 surge for a 23-21 advantage. At one point in the run, Memphis scored six-straight points.
- Bivins had two kills and Walter added another block in the spurt.
- Memphis was unable to keep the momentum as Central Arkansas wrapped up the set with a 6-2 run for the 27-25 win.
Set Three
- Memphis again grabbed an early advantage at 10-6.
- Flowers led the Tigers' charge in the run with three kills and a service ace.
- The Tigers maintained their four-point lead at 13-9 when Central Arkansas made its move.
- The Sugar Bears went on an 8-2 run to push in front 17-15.
- Over the set's next six points, the score was tied three times (17-all, 18-all, 19-all).
- From there, Central Arkansas closed the set and match.
- The Sugar Bears finished with a strong 6-3 run for the win.
