Junior running back named to list honoring accomplishments in athletics, academics and community service.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis junior running back Patrick Taylor was named a candidate for the Wuerffel Trophy Thursday. He is the eighth different member of the Tigers' roster to earn one of 12 watch list spots heading into the 2018 season.
The Wuerffel Trophy, which announced 106 candidates from the FBS, is named after 1996 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida. It is awarded annually to the player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.
Taylor tied the single game school record for touchdowns with his four-touchdown performance at Houston last year. He appeared in all 13 games for Memphis in 2017, with two starts, and finished second on the team with a 72.2 ypg rushing average. He had 157 rushes for 866 yards and a team-high 13 rushing touchdowns. Taylor also had 19 catches for 148 yards and one touchdown, and his 14 total touchdowns last season trailed only NCAA Consensus All-America honoree Anthony Miller's 18 touchdowns, which led the nation.
A business management major, Taylor is a two-time all-academic team member and is also a frequent visitor to LeBonheur Children's Hospital with his Tiger teammates.
Memphis will report for fall camp on Thursday, Aug. 2 and will step on the field for their first practice of the fall on Friday, Aug. 3. Fans can get their first look at the 2018 roster at Football Fan Fest on Saturday, Aug. 11. That event begins with an equipment sale at 4 pm, a 4:20 pm scrimmage and a post-scrimmage autograph session (approximately 6 pm). That event is free and will be held on the UofM Park Avenue Campus at the Murphy Athletic Complex.
