Visitation scheduled for Thursday.
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Former University of Memphis sprinter Lynn Fox, age 67, passed away at his Asheville, North Carolina home Thursday. Inducted in to the M Club Hall of Fame in 1994, Fox, a native of Chattanooga, was a highly-successful sprinter for the men's track and field program at then-Memphis State.
Joining the roster in 1968, Fox teamed with Everett Taylor, Ed Hammonds and Maurice Knight and captured the 1973 NCAA National Championship in the 4x100-yard relay with a time of 39.6 seconds, a mark that stood for 45 years until Sunday , when the current Memphis 4x100 team broke the mark at the AAC Championships. Behind that 1973 4x100-meter relay teams mark, and Hammonds' win in the 100-meter dash, Memphis State finished tied for eighth in the NCAA Men's Track & Field Championships.
As a single sprinter, Fox won Missouri Valley Conference in three events, as well as the 4x100 meter relay.
He received his degree in mechanical engineering in 1974 and joined the staff of Systematics Financial Services, spending many years working for the company in the Northeast, primarily in the New York City area. He retired in 2011 as the Director of Business Intelligence for HSBC Bank, USA, and he and his wife, Beth, with whom he has three daughters (Katie, Laura and Michelle) retired to Asheville.
A visitation for the family will be held on Thursday, May 17th at Groce Funeral Home (72 Long Shoals Road, Arden, North Carolina) from 6-7:30 pm. An obit for Fox can be found HERE.
