Box Score
DALLAS, Texas – Despite a late rally from the No. 18 Memphis men's tennis team, the Tigers dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to USF in the semifinal round of the American Athletic Conference Championships.
Memphis (18-5, 5-0) found itself in a deficit after the opening doubles point. USF scored wins at the top two positions for an early 1-0 lead.
After a brief weather delay forced singles action to resume indoors, the Tigers got on the board when Jan Pallares delivered a 6-2, 6-0 victory.
USF regained the match advantage on court 5, but Andrew Watson quickly followed to tie the match once more with a straight-set win at the No. 2 position.
Memphis found its first lead of the day when Ryan Peniston claimed a 7-5, 6-4 victory at the top spot. But the lead would not last as USF took a three-set thriller on court 3 and won a tiebreak on court 4 to set the 4-3 final.
The Tigers' setback halted their second-longest win streak in program history at 13 matches. Memphis seeks to regroup at the NCAA Championships with the regional field to be announced May 1 at 4:30 p.m. CT.
