DALLAS, Texas – After one of the most successful regular seasons in program history, the No. 18 Memphis men's tennis team turns its focus to the American Athletic Conference Championships.
The Tigers (17-4, 5-0) earned the No. 1 seed and a first round bye. Memphis will meet No. 8 seed Temple in the quarterfinal round on Friday at 9 a.m. The Owls opened tournament play by upending host SMU on Thursday.
"Our league has had four or five teams make the NCAA Tournament the last four or five years. It's a very deep conference with a lot of good teams," Head Coach Paul Goebel said of the field. "We just have to worry about our first match. We know not to take any match lightly, but I think our guys are really focused and I'm excited to see how we will do."
The Tigers will meet the Owls (13-9, 1-2) for the second time in as many matches. Memphis defeated Temple on Senior Day on Saturday to cap the regular season. After taking the opening doubles point, Memphis delivered six straight-set victories in singles action to complete the sweep.
Memphis is 4-4 all time in the league's championship tournament and holds a 4-0 series advantage against Temple.
