Tigers honor seniors with sweep

Memphis ties program record with 12th consecutive win

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – In the final regular season match of the campaign, the No. 17/19 Memphis men's tennis team turned in a sweep of Temple on Saturday at the Racquet Club of Memphis to finish the year unbeaten in league play and extend its win streak to 12 contests.
The 12-match streak ties the 1979 squad as the second-longest streak in program history. The Tigers, who completed the season 7-1 at home, also honored its senior class of Kai Lemke, Shakeel Manji, Ryan Peniston and Andrew Watson.
Memphis (17-6, 5-0) struck quickly in doubles as Matt Story and partner Jan Pallares took court 3 by a score of 6-3. The No. 35-ranked duo of Peniston and Watson followed with a 6-2 win at the top spot to secure the opening point.
In singles play, Felix Rauch continued the momentum with a straight-set win on court 6. Chris Patzanovsky followed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory on court 4 to push the Tiger advantage to 3-0.
At the No. 1 position, Peniston clinched the match for Memphis in straight sets. Lemke then followed with his 10th-straight victory.
Watson also extended his individual win streak to 12 matches with a 6-4, 6-2 win. At the 6 spot, despite falling behind early in the first set, Pallares earned a break late to win the opening frame then cruised to a 7-5, 6-1 win. His 10th consecutive win sealed the sweep for Memphis.
The Tigers will now prep for the American Athletic Conference Tournament. The league championship event from Dallas will begin Thursday with pairings to be announced Sunday evening.
