Apr 10, 2018 | Men's Track and Field
Two-time All-American set school record in men's discus last weekend.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Memphis' Luke Vaughn has been named the American Athletic Conference Male Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. It is the second time this season Vaughn earned the conference's weekly accolade.
Competing in "unspring-like" conditions at last Saturday's Crimson Tide Invitational, Vaughn threw a school record 200-2 (61.01m) in winning the men's discus title. His throw broke the 15-year-old record of 199-8 (60.85m) set in 2003 by Gaute Myklebust.
Vaughn's effort also surpassed his previous-best in the event by nearly 10 feet. His previous-best was a 190-8 (58.13m) throw as he claimed the 2015 American Athletic Conference men's discus crown. Last Saturday's discus title was the 10th of his career.
The East Peoria, Ill., native's 200-2 (61.01m) throw leads The American by nearly 14 feet and ranks fourth nationally. Vaughn is a two-time U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-America second teamer in the men's discus (2014, 2015).
The graduate student also placed third in the men's shot put at the Crimson Tide Invitational with a 59-8.25 (18.19m) toss. It is the eighth time in his career that Vaughn recorded top-three performances in both the men's discus and shot put in the same meet.
Memphis returns to action this Friday-Saturday, Apr. 13-14 at the Ole Miss Joe Walker Invitational in Oxford, Miss.
