Harris shoots final round 71 to post first Top 10
AIKEN, S.C. – Junior Chase Harris fired a final round 1-over 71 in a cold, persistent rain and the University of Memphis shot 294 – the fourth-lowest total of the day – to earn a tie for sixth in The Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate Tuesday at Palmetto Golf Club.
Harris finished at even-par 210, which included Monday's 3-under 67 – the best Memphis round of the 54-hole tournament – to record the first Top 10 of his career. Harris tied for seventh and was three shots back of co-leaders Jake Storey of Georgia Southern and Daniel Overas of Coastal Carolina, who participated in a playoff won by Overas.
The seventh-place finish was the second Top 10 in as many tournaments this spring for Memphis, which posted a 19-over 859. The Tigers finished eighth in last week's Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate at Hilton Head Island, S.C.
"It was a tough day out there with cold and steady rain, but I thought the boys did a nice job of hanging tough and competing," said Tiger coach Blake Smart. "We have shown some nice improvement the first two events, now we have a few weeks to get to work and clean some things up."
The Tigers will not compete again until the Ryman Intercollegiate April 9 and 10 in Nashville.
Besides Harris, the Tigers got solid efforts from Rodi Vlasveld and Borja Martin. Vlasveld, unable to participate in the Wexford Intercollegiate because of an illness, had rounds of 70-68-74 to finish two strokes back of Harris. Borja Martin, who posted a Top 10 at the Wexford Intercollegiate, opened the event with a 1-under 69 and shot 7-over 217. Brad Bawden shot 74 Tuesday to finish at 223, as did Jordan Even.
Harris' effort was particularly pleasing to Smart, who has witnessed a vast improvement since October.
"He made a commitment to see how good he could be," Smart said. "And this week was important validation of that effort."
