Tigers edge Blue Raiders for third straight win

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis women's tennis continued its winning ways with a 4-1 victory against Middle Tennessee Friday afternoon at the Racquet Club of Memphis.
The Tigers (11-7, 2-3) claimed the opening doubles point after duo Anki Wind and Katherine Cao took court 2 and tandem Hanna Sohn and Josephine Cao scored a victory on court 3.
In singles, Laura Bente and Katherine Cao continued individual win streaks, while Lina Hohnhold picked up the match-clinching victory for the Tigers.
Bente was first off the court to give Memphis a 2-0 lead in the match. The freshman swept the opening set then cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory for her third straight win.
The Blue Raiders (12-6, 1-1) answered to get on the board with a win at the No. 4 spot for their lone point of the day.
Katherine Cao silenced the comeback effort with a straight-set victory at the No. 5 position. The sophomore pushed her win streak to eight matches and gave Memphis the 3-1 advantage. The 6-3, 7-5 win was also her 10th singles victory in dual match play this season.
To close the day, Hohnhold fought through a pair of break points to force deuce, then held serve to take a 6-4, 7-5 victory. The freshman tallied her third singles win of the season and her first match-clinching win for the Tigers.
Memphis will return to the road for a solo match next weekend, as the Tigers face another Conference USA foe in North Texas on Saturday. First serve from Denton, Texas is slated for 11 a.m.
