MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After a 4-2 comeback win against ECU on Friday, the Memphis women's tennis team overcame another early deficit to down Tulane, 5-2, to cap a weekend sweep in league play.
"I'm so proud of this team right now. It's hard to put into words," head coach Hayden Perez said. "They are an outstanding group of young ladies that are fighting so hard for each other. I will mention it again for the second match in a row, but our tough schedule early in the season is starting to pay off. Tulane is a tough team, they made us play some very good tennis."
Tulane (8-8, 1-1) took the early advantage with a pair of wins in doubles. After Tulane took court 1, the Tigers sparked a rally on courts 2 and 3. Down 3-0 on court 2, duo Anki Wind and Katherine Cao won the next six games to take a 6-3 win. At the 3 spot, tandem Hanna Sohn and Josephine Cao rallied to take a 5-4 lead, but Tulane claimed the next three games to clinch the match and the doubles point.
In singles, the Tigers (10-7, 2-3) turned the tide with five straight wins. Memphis claimed first-set wins on four of the six courts to score an early edge, while the Tigers turned in three straight-set wins.
Sohn was first off the court at the No. 2 position after recording her third straight singles win. The senior posted a 6-3 win in the first set, then swept the second frame to earn a 6-3, 6-0 victory and get the Tigers on the board.
Wind quickly followed with a straight-set win at the top spot. Her 6-3, 6-1 victory pushed her singles record to 14-2 this spring and gave the Tigers their first lead in the match at 2-1.
On court 4, freshman Alisha Reayer extended the Tigers lead to 3-1 with her second win of the weekend. After clinching the match against ECU on Friday, Reayer posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory against the Green Wave.
Fellow freshman Laura Bente went the distance to clinch the match for the Tigers on court 3. Following a three-set thriller against ECU, Bente repeated the effort for a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 win.
Sophomore Katherine Cao also erased a first-set setback and delivered her seventh straight win with a 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) victory on court 5. The Green Wave's lone singles win came on court 6, where Tulane scratched out a third-set tiebreak to set the 5-2 final.
The Tigers remain home for a match against in-state foe Middle Tennessee on Friday. First serve against the Blue Raiders is set for 10 a.m. at the Racquet Club of Memphis.
