Memphis faces Baylor, SMU
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After over a week away from the court, the No. 41 Memphis men's tennis team returns to action with a pair of road matches this weekend in Texas.
The Tigers (5-3) travel to No. 32 Baylor for a match Friday before traveling to Dallas for an American Athletic Conference meeting against SMU on Sunday afternoon.
Memphis returns to action after splitting a pair of matches against Michigan State and No. 13 Michigan two weekends ago. Senior Ryan Peniston, who ranks No. 54 nationally in singles, anchors the top spot for the Tigers with a 6-1 record. Junior Felix Rauch is also off to a solid start this spring, having posted a 3-1 record in doubles alongside sophomore Jan Pallares and has compiled a 4-1 singles mark.
Baylor (9-3) enters the weekend owner of a 10-match home win streak dating back to last season. Nationally ranked players in No. 38 Johannes Schretter and No. 74 Bjoern Petersen anchor the Bears in singles play. In doubles, tandem Will Little and Schretter are ranked No. 5, while duo Jimmy Bendeck and Petersen check in at No. 55. Friday's match marks the seventh consecutive meeting between the two programs, with Baylor holding an 8-0 series advantage.
On Sunday, Memphis seeks its six straight wins against league foe SMU (5-7). The Mustangs have won two of their last three matches, with the lone loss coming at the hands of then-No. 10 Oklahoma State last Sunday. Jan-Simon Vrbsky has posted a 5-3 record at the top spot for the Mustangs in singles play, while Roberto Rosales and Tomas Vaise each seek to improve two-match win streaks. Memphis and SMU have split the all-time series, 5-5, with Memphis having claimed the previous five meetings.
