ITHICA, N.Y. – From start to finish the Memphis men's tennis team turned in a solid performance as the Tigers opened the weekend with a 4-0 sweep against Cornell.
The Tigers (3-2) swept the doubles point and turned the momentum into three singles wins to capture the victory.
"Tonight was a good win for our team," head coach Paul Goebel said. "It was good to get the doubles point, and we fought hard on every court. We will get ready for another tough match tomorrow."
A hard week of practice paid off for Tigers in doubles play as the Tigers wasted no time getting on the board. Duo Andrew Watson and Ryan Peniston took Court 1 by a score of 6-3, while Jan Pallares and Felix Rauch sealed the opening point with a 6-4 victory on Court 3.
In singles, Rauch continued his impressive start to the spring season with a win at the No. 5 position and improved his dual match record to 3-1. The Germany native was first off the court with a 6-4, 6-3 victory and pushed the Tiger lead to 2-0.
Junior Chris Patzanovsky stopped a two-match slide by claiming Court 4 by a final of 7-5, 6-4, and Memphis' No. 61-ranked Peniston rebounded from last weekend's setback with a 6-4, 6-4 win at the top spot to clinch the match for the Tigers.
The Tigers return to the court Saturday at 2 p.m. for a neutral site showdown against Penn State (3-2). The match will be the first meeting between the two programs. Memphis holds a 15-8 record all-time against Big Ten opponents, including a win against Indiana in the season opener.
