Women’s Golf Finishes Fifth at Moon Golf Invitational

Three Lady Tigers finish in the top 20 at Florida event.
MEMPHIS – Three Lady Tiger golfers finished in the top 20 while helping Memphis to a tie for fifth place among the 13 teams at the Moon Golf Invitational, Tuesday, at Duran Golf Club. Madison Thomas (tied for fifth), Sydney Colwill (tied for 18th) and Emily Goldenstein (tied for 20th) posted top 20 finishes at the event.
Furman's Alice Chen claimed individual medalist honors with a third round 70 (-2) to post a 211 for the 54-holes, three strokes ahead of Chattanooga's Monica San Juan and Furman teammate Natalie Srinivasan (214). Furman, the number nine ranked women's team in the country, claimed the team event with an 863 (-1), 17 strokes ahead of runner-up Old Dominion (880). Virginia Tech and Chattanooga (881) tied for third and Memphis tied with Augusta (882) to finish tied for fifth, six strokes ahead of No. 26 Louisville.
Thomas posted her second top five finish of the season after a third round 77 moved her to 217 for the event. An eagle on one as she approached the final five holes of the day pushed her back to +4, but a bogey on her final hole of the event had her finish at +5 for the day and +1 for the event.
Colwill finished in a tie for 18th at 221. She matched her second round 73 from Monday, picking up three birdies in her final round to finish two strokes out of the top 10. This is Colwill's sixth top 20 finish in seven events this season.
Goldenstein proved that her opening round 82 was well behind her on Tuesday, firing a 71 to improve an additional 15 spots for her 15th career top 20 finish and the fourth this season. Her 222 tied her for 20th overall with Southern Miss' Valentina Haupt.
Michaela Fletcher improved her standing by nine spots with her third round 74, posting a 227 to finished tied for 35th overall.
Abby Herrmann rounded out the Memphis competitors with a 236. The sophomore fired an 81 on Tuesday to finish tied for 59th overall.
Memphis will return to competition in March, when the team travels to North Carolina to participate in the River Landing Classic. That event, co-hosted by UNC Wilmington and American Athletic Conference foe East Carolina, will be held at the River landing Golf Course, Mar. 5-6.
