COLUMBIA, Mo. – In a back-and-forth contest that saw multiple ties and momentum swings, the Memphis women's tennis team stood victorious in a 4-3 decision against Minnesota Saturday afternoon.
Memphis (6-3) dropped the opening doubles point, but battled through a hard-fought singles effort to claim the win.
"Today was a total team effort," head coach Hayden Perez said. "It was a great college tennis match. Credit to Minnesota for a great effort. They competed well and brought out great tennis from us. I was proud of everyone today. We competed like I know we are capable of competing. We lost the doubles point for only the second time all season, but came out hot in singles."
After dropping the opening doubles point, the Tigers responded quickly in singles play. Making her Memphis debut, freshman Alisha Reayer was first off the court with a 6-0, 6-1 win on court 3 to tie the match 1-1. Senior Anki Wind quickly followed with a straight-set win of her own at the top spot to push her win streak to five matches and give the Tigers their first lead of the day at 2-1.
Gopher Barbara Mancera took court 4 to even the score, before senior Hanna Sohn fought through a third-set tiebreak for her fifth singles win of the season to regain the Tiger lead at 3-2.
Minnesota provided one final push after Caitlyn Merzbacher won court 5, but Katherine Cao silenced the comeback bid and clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win on court 6.
Memphis seeks to continue the momentum Sunday at 1 p.m. in a match against the Missouri Tigers.
