DeMoss, Wesner named conference Athletes of the Week.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The University of Memphis track and field program made it a sweep of the American Athletic Conference Male Athlete of the Week honors, the league office announced Tuesday. Senior Davon DeMoss received the conference's Male Track Athlete of the Week award, and senior Jordan Wesner earned the Male Field Athlete of the Week accolade.
Â
It is the third career weekly honor for both DeMoss and Wesner. The accolade was DeMoss' second indoor honor of his career. He also received recognition once in the outdoor season. For Wesner, this week's indoor distinction was the first of his career. He has two previous outdoor Athlete of the Week awards.
Â
At the Dec. 1 Vanderbilt Opener, DeMoss won the 60 (6.79) and 200 (21.34) meters. It was the second in his indoor career he was a double-winner. The 60 meters win was the fourth of his indoor career. The Jackson, Tenn., native also won two events at the 2017 Vanderbilt Opener, taking first in the 60 meters and 4x400 meter relay.
Â
DeMoss, who set the indoor school records in the 60 and 200 meters in 2017, leads The American and is fourth nationally in the 200 meters (21.34). He is second in the league and 11th nationally in the 60 meters (6.79).
Â
Wesner won the Vanderbilt Opener high jump with a school-record mark of 7-4.5 (2.25m). His jump surpassed the nearly 30-year-old record by over an inch (7-3.25; 2.22m). The previous record was set in 1989 by Tyrone Betters.
Â
Wesner's 7-4.5 (2.25m) is the top jump in the nation. He leads the country's second-best jump by 1.5 inches (7-3; 2.21m) and the American Athletic Conference's second-place jump by 6.25 inches (6-10.25; 2.09m).
Â
The Princeton, Wis., native also holds the Memphis outdoor high jump record (7-3.75; 2.23m).
Â
The Tigers men's and women's track and field squads now break for the Christmas and New Year's holidays and return to action Jan. 18-19, 2019, at the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville, Tenn.
