Volleyball Falls At Houston Sunday

HOUSTON, Texas – University of Memphis' Hannah Flowers, Kelsea Bivins and Sarah Marlatt each had double-digit kills Sunday, but it wasn't enough as the Tigers fell 3-1 at Houston.

The Cougars won Sunday's American Athletic Conference match by scores of 25-19, 25-17, 23-25 and 25-20. With the setback, Memphis falls to 11-14 overall and 4-9 in the league. Houston improves to 15-13 overall and 2-11 in the conference.

Flowers led the Tigers with 13 kills. Bivins added 11 kills, and Marlatt had 10 kills.

The Tigers return to action next weekend for their final two home matches of the 2018 campaign. Memphis hosts Connecticut Friday and Temple Sunday at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Prior to Sunday's 12 p.m. (CT) match versus Temple, Senior Day ceremonies will be held.

- Hannah Flowers posted her 22nddouble-digit kills match of the season with her 13 kills Sunday. It was the 34thdouble-figures kills match of her career.
- Kelsea Bivins had 11 kills Sunday. It was the seventh time in the last nine matches Bivins recorded double-digit kills.
- Sarah Marlatt had 10 kills versus Houston. It was her fourth double-digit kills performance of the season.
- Bre Carlton recorded her first match with double-digit assists – 11 versus Houston Sunday – since Sept. 8.
- Mady Ruhlman had 14 digs versus the Cougars Sunday. It was her first match with double-figures digs since Oct. 14.
- Meredith Wallace had nine kills and seven digs Sunday. Her nine kills were the most since she had 10 versus UCF Sept. 30. Her seven digs were the most since she collected 10 versus Tulane Oct. 5.

Set One
- The opening set was close early and was tied at 10-all after the first 20 points.
- Houston used an 8-2 spurt to push out to an 18-12 advantage and never trailed in the set again.
- Memphis cut the Cougars' lead to five at 21-16 on a Kelsea Bivins kill.
- Houston closed the first set on a 4-3 run for the 25-19 win.Â
Set Two
- The second set started in much the same way as the first with six ties in the first 14 points.
- Memphis pulled out to a 10-7 lead with a 3-0 run.
- Sarah Marlatt had a kill and Hannah Flowers added an ace in the spurt.
- Houston answered with an 8-3 spurt to take a 15-13 lead.
- After a Bivins kill cut the Cougars' lead to 15-14, Houston finished the set on a 10-3 run for the 25-17 win and a 2-0 match advantage.
Set Three
- The teams went back-and-forth in the opening points, and Houston held a narrow 10-8 lead.
- The Cougars built on their lead, extending out to a six-point advantage at 15-9.
- The Tigers answered with 5-1 run to cut the Houston lead to 16-14.
- Flowers and Kelsey Walter each had two kills to key the spurt.
- Houston held an 18-16 lead, but that's when Memphis made its move.
- The Tigers used a 5-0 surge to take the lead at 21-18.
- Marlatt had two blocks in the run.
- Houston came back to reclaim the lead at 23-22, but Memphis had the final answer.
- Kills from Bivins and Flowers and a block from Walter gave the Tigers the 25-23 set win.
Set Four
- Memphis pulled out to an early 10-4 advantage.
- Marlatt and Meredith Wallace each posted two kills in the run.
- Houston responded with a 6-1 spurt to cut the Tigers' advantage to one at 11-10.
- Memphis remained in front at 14-12 on another Wallace kill.
- The Cougars, though, surged ahead on an 8-2 run for a 20-16 lead.
- After Memphis cut the lead to 20-17, Houston closed out the set on a 5-3 run for the 25-20 win and 3-1 match victory.
