Tigers sophomore named to the all-conference second team.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Memphis' Hannah Flowers has been named to the All-American Athletic Conference volleyball second team, the league office announced Tuesday. The all-conference volleyball teams were selected by a vote of the league's head coaches.
Â
Flowers is the first Tiger to earn All-American Athletic Conference honors since 2014. That season, Lauren Wright was an all-conference first team pick and Aleksandra Petronijevic a second-team selection.
Â
The Wildwood, Mo., native was twice named the American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week in 2018 (Sept. 10; Oct. 15). She also earned Tennessee Sports Writers Association (TSWA) Player of the Week honors twice this season (Sept. 5; Oct. 17). Flowers was named the Tiger Invitational Most Outstanding Player (MOP) for her play in the two-day tournament Sept. 7-8.
Â
The 6-foot-2 right side hitter led the Tigers in kills (373), hitting percentage (.264) and service aces (45). She was second on the squad with 75 total blocks and added 184 digs. Her 373 kills were the most by a Tiger since the 2014 season (Kate Gibson, 380), and her 45 aces were the most by a Memphis player since 2008 (Christine Bach, 47).
Â
Flowers had 23 matches with double-digit kills in 2018 and now has 35 career matches with double-figures kills. She knocked down a career-high 20 kills in matches at Ole Miss Sept. 11 and SMU Nov. 2 and also posted seven double-doubles (kills-digs). Flowers had a career-best 13 digs against Houston Oct. 12 and a career-high five aces twice versus Alabama A&M Aug. 29 and Louisiana Monroe Sept. 7.
Â
The sophomore increased all of her numbers from her first season with the Tigers in 2017. Flowers improved her kills total by more than 100 (257 in 2017; 373 in 2018) and her hitting percentage by more than 50 points (.210 in 2017; .264 in 2018). Her service aces (5 in 2017; 45 in 2018) and digs (28 in 2017; 184 in 2018) also increased.
Â
Flowers finished 2018 ranked among the American Athletic Conference statistical leaders in kills (6th), hitting percentage (14th) and aces (2nd).
