Rifle Sets School Records In Victory

Tigers defeat four ranked foes to take Gamecock Invitational.
JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – University of Memphis' Levi Clark, Leighton Dempster and Arielle Kimm all shot over 1170 aggregate scores to lead the Tigers to a record-setting weekend and a first-place finish in the 2018 Gamecock Invitational Sunday. The scores became official Monday morning.

Memphis, ranked No. 7 in the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) poll, won the invitational with a school-record aggregate score of 4689 (2332 smallbore/2357 air rifle). The Tigers also set a school record in smallbore with their 2332 score. Memphis was one point of tying the school record in air rifle with its 2357 mark. The 2016-17 squad shot a 2358 in the discipline in a win at Navy on Oct. 9, 2016.

The Tigers posted wins over No. 8 Nebraska, No. 14 Jacksonville State, No. 19 UT Martin, No. 20 North Georgia and UAB in the Gamecock Invitational. The match was held at the Gamecock Rifle Range on the Jacksonville State campus.

Dempster led the way for Memphis with a 1176 aggregate, and Clark followed with a 1172 aggregate. Kimm, a freshman, shot a career-high 1171.

Up Next
The Tigers are off from competition the next two months for final exams and the semester break. Memphis returns to action after the New Year on Jan. 20 when they travel to Lexington, Ky., for a neutral-site match versus Akron.

Tigers Tidbits
- The Tigers' 4689 aggregate score surpassed the previous school record of 4683 set in the 2013-14 season. That year, Memphis went on to place fourth at the NCAA Championships, and the captain of the 2013-14 team was Dan Hermsmeier.
- Memphis' 2332 smallbore score also bettered the previous school record of 2329 set in that same Navy match in 2013-14.
- Leighton Dempster took individual aggregate honors in the Gamecock Invitational with her 1176 score. It was three points off her career-best 1179 that she shot against NC State Oct. 27.
- Dempster has shot an aggregate of 1170 or higher in each of her last three matches.
- Dempster also took top honors in the air rifle discipline at the Gamecock Invitational. She shot a 595 score, which is one point off her school-record 596 that she shot twice earlier this season.
- Levi Clark was five points away from tying his career-high aggregate of 1177, which he set vs. Kentucky Oct. 28. It is the second-straight match Clark has shot above 1170.
- Arielle Kimm shattered her previous-best aggregate of 1160 earlier this season.
- Kimm tied her season-high air rifle mark with a 589 in the Gamecock Invitational.
- Kimm also shot a career-best 582 smallbore score. It is the fourth-consecutive match in which she improved her smallbore mark.
- Freshman David Crenshaw shot a career-high 585 air rifle score Sunday. His previous-best was a 583 mark in the season opener.
- Sophomore Matt Dorey posted a career-high 585 score in smallbore in the Gamecock Invitational. His previous-best was 580, which he set against NC State Oct. 27 and Ole Miss last season.
