Former Tiger D.J. Stephens Signs Two-Way Deal With Grizzlies

High-leaping fan-favorite spent four seasons at the UofM
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Former University of Memphis player D.J. Stephens has signed a two-way contract to play for the Memphis Grizzlies. He joins another former Tiger, Markel Crawford, who also is on the Grizzlies training camp roster this preaseason.

Stephens played four seasons for the Tigers and was named the 2012-13 Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year as a senior.

Last season, Stephens played professionally in France. He appeared in 46 games, with nine starts, and averaged 9.2 points and 3.7 rebounds while helping Le Mans Sarthe Basket to the French LNB Pro A championship. With Le Mans Sarthe Basket, Stephens earned the league's Six Man of the Year Award.

During the summer, he played in seven games for the Grizzlies during the MGM Resorts NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, his second summer league stint with the Grizzlies.

Possessing an outstanding vertical leap, Stephens (6-5, 188) has played in the NBA. He appeared in three NBA regular-season games for the Milwaukee Bucks during the 2013-14 season. He also split the 2015-16 season with the NBA G League's Canton Charage and Iowa Energy. In his NBA G League career, Stephens, 27, has averages of 10.5 points and 5.6 rebounds and 1.26 blocks.

Stephens was named NBA G League Performer of the Week in March 2016 and competed in the 2016 Slam Dunk Contest as part of the G League All-Star Weekend.

A native of Killeen, Texas, Stephens has played professionally in Ukraine (2016-17), Puerto Rick (2016-17), Russia (2014-15), Greece (2013-14) and Turkey (2013-14).
