Five Tigers claim line titles in final day of Samford Round Robin
Oct 07, 2018 | Women's Tennis
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Capping the Samford Round Robin, the Memphis women's tennis team tallied five wins on Sunday, as five Tigers claimed singles and doubles line titles.
Memphis notched three victories in doubles and then closed the invitational with three wins in singles action. Sophomore Lina Hohnhold was named the singles champion for Line 6, while duos Katherine Cao and Hannah Davies along with Josephine Cao and Claire Sullivan were named Line 2 and Line 3 doubles champions.
"Today we won three of four doubles and I was excited about that. We faced some tough competition and handled some situations well," head coach Hayden Perez said. "The singles effort was not what I was hoping for, but there were some bright spots for sure. We are still in the process of learning and growing."
Katherine Cao and Davies etched their third doubles win of the weekend with a 6-2 victory, while Josephine Cao and Sullivan took a 6-3 win. Hohnhold and Aleks Topalovic also claimed a doubles win on Sunday with a 6-2 decision.
In singles, Hohnhold collected her third victory of the weekend after defeating Samford's India Ampaw in straight sets. Katherine Cao also took a straight-set decision against Samford's Holly Horsfall, 6-4, 7-6, and despite dropping the first set, Kayla Klazmer rallied for a three-set victory against Samford's Amanda Kilduff, 6-7, 7-5, 6-3.
"This is a young team and I have to remind myself of that sometimes; this weekend was a good experience for us and I'm proud of this group," Perez added. "It's a short week, so rest is key as we gear up for our ITA Regional Championship."
The Tigers return to the court this week at the ITA Regional Championships in Chattanooga, Tenn., with action beginning Thursday.
