School-Record 278 Rockets Women’s Golf to Fourth Place Finish

Five golfers fire a final found under par to set new school record.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's golf team had five golfers card a third and final round under par, including all four team scorers, to set a Memphis single round record Sunday, at the Big Blue Course at the University of Kentucky in the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational. The final round 278 rocketed Memphis up five spots to a fourth-place finish at 874 (+10).
The previous low round record was 281. Initially set in last year's Magnolia Invitational, the mark was tied in this year's season-opener at the Missouri State/Payne Stewart Memorial when the team fired a 281 in the final round to win that event.
Two Lady Tigers posted top 10 finishes to help the team jump to a top four finish. Senior Michaela Fletcher carded a career-low 67 in her final round to finish tied for seventh at 214 (-2). That is the second top 10 finish in three events for Fletcher this season and is her 11thtop 10 finish in 36 career events.
A day after tying her career low round, fellow senior Sydney Colwill scored an even 72 in her final round to finish even at 216 for the event, good for a ninth-place finish overall. Like Fletcher, Colwill now has two top 10 finishes in three events this season.
Senior Madison Thomas, golfing in her final collegiate event in her native Kentucky, matched her career-low round with a Sunday 71 (-1). That allowed her to finish at 221 (+5) and tied for 25thin the event, an eight-spot improvement from her Saturday standing.
The final team score on Sunday came from junior Abby Herrmann. After an opening round 78 and a second round 80, Herrmann carded a career-low round of 68 Sunday to jump to 226 (+10), moving from a tie for 61stto a tie for 39thin the final standings.
Individual golfer Victoria Gallegos also go in on the sub-par action, firing a 69 on Sunday to finish at 227 (+11) and tied for 42ndoverall. Her final round 69 is the low round of her two-tournament-old Memphis career.
Julia Matzat rounded out the Memphis entrants in the event. Matzat matched her second round 80 to finish at 235 (+19) and tied for 63rd.
Kentucky claimed the team championship at 858 (-6), followed by Penn State (860, -4), Middle Tennessee (869, +5) and Memphis (874, +10). Kentucky's Leonie Bettel grabbed individual medalist honors with a 205 (-11).
Memphis is back in action again this weekend, traveling to West Point, Mississippi, to participate in the Magnolia Invitational, Oct. 14-16. Memphis finished second of 10 teams at the same event last year and then-sophomore Herrmann tied for first, falling on the second hole of a sudden death playoff for medalist honors to Ole Miss' Julia Johnson.
