Memphis collects 10th shutout of season
HOUSTON, Texas – No. 18/24 Memphis women's soccer continued its winning ways with a 4-0 victory at Houston on Thursday afternoon at Carl Lewis Complex.
Memphis scored twice in the first half and twice in the second half to extend its winning streak to nine contests. The Tigers' offensive attack, which entered the day fourth nationally in scoring offense, tallied a season-high 34 shots.
Defensively, the Tigers limited Houston to eight shots, while sophomore goalkeeper Elizabeth Moberg registered her nation-leading 10th shutout of the season.
"I thought it was a very strong performance by us. I thought the kids really listened to the game plan. The energy they brought from the very beginning was the difference today," head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "We kept the energy up for 90 minutes and played a lot of players, and the level never dropped. We beat a very good Houston team. It was a great win for us."
Memphis' first goal came in the 23rd minute of action off the foot of freshman Tanya Boychuk. After sophomore Clarissa Larisey chased down a loose ball and drew the goalkeeper out of position, Larisey dropped a pass to Boychuk, who drove it in to the back of the net for her second score of the year.
The Tigers then increased their lead to 2-0 just seconds before halftime when junior Jessica Lisi notched her fifth goal of the season on her third penalty kick of the year.
Sophomore Samantha Murphy opened the second-half scoring in the 49th minute. After a scrum in front of the net, Murphy collected the ball and punched it home for her team-leading ninth goal of the year.
Marie Levasseur capped the scoring in the 66th minute. The senior collected Lisi's free kick inside the box and tallied her third goal of the season to set the 4-0 final.
"We tell the girls, 'You're creating this for yourself because of the mentality and work you're putting in each match,'" Monaghan said of the team's momentum. "It's not just happening. They are dictating the game. We have to continue to do that from game-to-game."
The Tigers continue their league road trip with a visit to SMU on Sunday. Kickoff from Dallas, Texas is set for 1 p.m.
