Tigers race in downpour, muddy course Thursday.
NEW ORLEANS, La. – In a torrential downpour and on a muddy-puddled course, the University of Memphis cross country squad competed in the 2018 American Athletic Conference Championships Thursday. The championships races – men's 8k and women's 6k – were held at The Golf Club at Audubon Park.
Â
The lone senior on each team led the way for the Tigers. Senior Kristen Adams was the women's top finisher, crossing the line in 47th place. On the men's side, senior Matthew Viveiros was the first Tiger to complete the 8k race in 34th place.
Â
The Tigers men's squad finished seventh in Thursday's race. The Memphis women's squad placed 10th.
Â
No Tigers runner set a personal-best due to the deteriorating race conditions. In fact, the men's and women's overall individual champions both ran slower times than their personal-bests Thursday. Wichita State's Winny Koskei, The American women's champion, was over 1:22 slower than her 6k personal-best she set two weeks earlier. On the men's side, Tulane's Emmanuel Rotich's time was over two minutes behind his conference championship-winning time of a year ago.
