Oct 13, 2018 | Women's Golf
Memphis, Tenn. – After carding the best round of play in program history to close out the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational, the Lady Tigers aim to keep the momentum rolling at this weekend's 2018 Magnolia Invitational. The 6,320-yard, par 72 course at Old Waverly Golf Club, home to the Mississippi State Bulldogs golf teams, will host 13 teams over the three days of play. Memphis returns to this tournament after placing second to Ole Miss last season.
The contingent heading to West Point, Miss. for the Lady Tigers will be Michaela Fletcher, Sydney Colwill, Madison Thomas, Abby Herrmann, and Anna Dawson. Colwill, Thomas, and Herrmann will be returning to familiar territory, as they are the three Tigers from last year's contingent making the trip back to the Magnolia Invitational. Herrmann was the highest finisher in the 2017 tournament, as she tied for first with a collegiate-best finish of 209.
Fletcher is coming off the best round of golf of her career, as she carded a career-low 67 in the third round of the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational. The phenomenal third round was good enough to propel Fletcher to a final standing of being tied for seventh, giving her the second top-10 finish of the season.
Also earning her second top-10 finish of the season, Colwill finished 10thoverall after putting together a 54-hole total of 216, matching the course's par. Colwill tied her career-best 18-hole score in the second round shooting strong to card a 68.
Two other Tigers that tied their career-lows in the final round of play were Herrmann and Thomas. Herrmann improved ten shots on her opening round score in the final round of play, shooting a 68 to catapult her to a tie for 39th, after entering the day in a tie for 61st. Thomas tied her career-low score for 18 holes, shooting a 71 in the final round of play. Last weekend's tournament was Thomas' last collegiate action in her home state of Kentucky.
Ana Dawson had last weekend off from play but will be rejoining the team after placing in a tie for 48that the Lady Paladin Invitational.
The tournament will be contested over three days, with the first two days being in the traditional team play format and Sunday being played with a shotgun start. Memphis will tee off the tenth tee on Friday at 9:20 am C.T. with Kansas State and Middle Tennessee State. Other teams competing in the tournament will be Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Auburn, Coastal Carolina, East Tennessee, Kennesaw State, LSU, Oklahoma, Southern Miss., and Virginia Tech.
