Tigers take their first road trip of the season this weekend.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After a successful start to the 2018-19 campaign in winning the Tiger Open, the University of Memphis rifle team takes to the road for Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) matches at Army West Point and West Virginia.
The Tigers face the Cadets in West Point, N.Y., Saturday, and then travel to Morgantown, W.Va., to meet the Mountaineers. Both matches begin at 8 a.m. (CT).
Last year, Memphis hosted both Army West Point and West Virginia at the R.F. Fogelman Rifle Range and dropped both matches.
The Tigers kicked off the 2018-19 campaign by winning their own Tiger Open. Memphis shot against Jacksonville State in the event and defeated the Gamecocks 4649-4648.
After two weeks of competition, the Tigers returned to the No. 14 spot in Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) poll. Memphis dropped to No. 15 in the first poll of the regular season after beginning at No. 14 in the preseason poll.
Head coach Dan Hermsmeier comments
(On the road trip to Army West Point)
"This is a really good first road trip for us. Army West Point has a good team. I'm of the mindset that our team will improve when we shoot against the best teams, and Army West Point will provide a really good challenge for us."
(On returning to West Virginia, where he served as a graduate assistant coach)
"It will be great going back there to see the coaches and the facilities. We'll shoot on their new electronic-target, mobile-range system they have there. We shot on them at last year's conference championships. It will be a good match atmosphere to shoot in. West Virginia always provides a great challenge, and we'll become a better team because of competing against them."

Tigers Tidbits
- The Tigers made history in their last trip to West Point, N.Y., in the 2016-17 season. Memphis defeated the Cadets for the first time in West Point, N.Y., in Tigers' program history. Memphis squeaked by with a 4652-4641 victory.
- Senior Leighton Demspter and junior Levi Clark are the only two current Tigers to shoot at Army West Point. In that 2016 match, Clark logged the match's top aggregate score (1169) and Dempster was sixth (1157).
- Sunday's trip to Morgantown, W.Va., is a "second-return-home" trip for Tigers head coach Dan Hermsmeier. The Memphis mentor took his 2017-18 Tigers squad to Morgantown for the Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships last February. After completing his undergraduate degree at Memphis, Hermsmeier moved to West Virginia, where he served as a graduate assistant for the Mountaineers program for two seasons.
- Levi Clark shot a career-high 1171 aggregate against West Virginia in Morgantown two seasons ago. He also posted a career-best 588 in air rifle. Clark tied both of those marks at the 2018 NCAA Sectional Qualifier in Murray, Ky.
- Sunday's Memphis-West Virginia match features two of the top-eight finishers in smallbore at the 2018 NCAA Championships. Levi Clark, a Tigers junior, placed sixth and Mountaineers junior Morgan Phillips won the NCAA title in the discipline.
