Tigers unable to convert on second half opportunities
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis men's soccer team was unable to overcome a second half goal and fell by a score of 1-0 to Kentucky Saturday afternoon. The setback puts the Tigers at 0-2-1 on the year.
The two squads found themselves at a 0-0 stalemate after 45 minutes of action. The Tigers and the Wildcats maintained even possession throughout the half and in all, Memphis was able to fire off two shots against the Kentucky defense.
In the second half, however, a defensive miscue by the Tigers led to a red card and a penalty kick for the Wildcats. Kentucky converted in the 62nd minute, scoring what proved to be the game-winning goal.
Memphis created an opportunity late in the match, but struggled to find the back of the net for the equalizing goal.
The Tigers finished with seven shots in the match compared to 13 by Kentucky. The Wildcats registered eight corners to Memphis' three.
Memphis will now hit the road for five-straight matches, beginning with a contest against SIUE Monday evening at 7 p.m. For more information on the Memphis men's soccer team, follow the Tigers on Facebook at /MemphisSoccer and on Twitter and Instagram at @MemphisMSoccer.
