Volleyball Wins Home Opener Over Louisiana Monroe

Bivins, Hoerdemann ignite Tigers to 3-0 victory.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After three weeks on the road to start the 2017 campaign, the University of Memphis returned to the friendly confines of the Elma Roane Fieldhouse Friday for its home opener in the Memphis Invitational.
The Tigers enjoyed the familiar surroundings in the opening match of the two-day tournament, posting a 3-0 non-conference victory over Louisiana Monroe. Memphis won the match by scores of 25-17, 27-25 and 28-26.
Junior college transfer Kelsea Bivins logged a double-double performance (12 kills/10 digs), and freshman Kate Hoerdemann collected a season-high 18 digs to power Memphis to the win.
Memphis evened its 2017 record at 5-5. Louisiana Monroe fell to 3-11. The Tigers return to action Friday evening with a match versus Nicholls.

"We had a great crowd today, and had some good energy. It was nice to get that first home win under our belts. We got the opportunity to play a lot of players in the match. We got a really solid performance from Kate (Hoerdemann), who led us in digs today, and has been playing well for us. It was nice to get the 3-0 win."

Tigers Tidbits
- Friday's home opener for the Tigers was the latest the program started a home schedule since 1991. That season, Memphis' home opener was Sept. 20.
- Junior college transfer Kelsea Bivins recorded her first double-double of her Memphis career vs. Louisiana Monroe with 12 kills and 10 digs.
- Bivins notched her fourth-straight, double-figures kills match Friday. She is averaging 13.0 kills in the Tigers' last four matches.
- Freshman Kate Hoerdemann had a season-best 18 digs Friday. Her previous high was 11 in a marathon 3-2 win over Sam Houston State Sept. 8. It was her second double-figures digs match of the season.
- Redshirt freshman Natale Zanellato logged 10 kills vs. Louisiana Monroe for her second-straight, double-figures kill match of the season. She had a season-best 17 kills in a 3-0 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff Sept. 9. It was her third double-figures kills match of 2017.
- Sophomore Brianna Kadiku registered a season-best seven total blocks Friday. It was the sixth match this season in which she was credited with four or more total blocks.
- Senior Faith Myers had 22 assists for her fifth 20-plus performance of the season.

How It Happened
- Overall Match
- The match featured 25 ties and 13 lead changes.
- Memphis improved its record in three-set matches to 4-1.
- The Tigers have a 5-2 record when winning the opening set.
- Memphis has a 7-2 record in sets that go into extra scoring this season. The Tigers were 2-0 in those instances vs. Louisiana Monroe, winning 27-25 in the second set and 28-26 in the final game.
- Set One (Memphis 25-17)
- The set was tied early at 3-all, but the Tigers used a 7-1 run to grab a lead they didn't lose the rest of the game.
- Brianna Kadiku had two kills in that run to give Memphis a 10-4 advantage.
- The Tigers increased their lead to as many as 10 at 17-7 on a Sarah Marlatt kill.
- Louisiana Monroe climbed to within six at 18-12, but got no closer the rest of the set.
- Set Two (Memphis 27-25)
- The Warhawks responded strong to open the second set, moving out to an early 4-1 advantage.
- Louisiana Monroe maintained its lead until a 4-0 Memphis spurt pushed the home squad in front at 9-8. Kadiku, Kelsea Bivins and Natale Zanellato each downed a kill in the run.
- The Warhawks, though, regained the lead and increased it to as many as five at 21-16.
- Memphis answered with a 5-1 spurt to close to within one at 22-21. Kills from Hannah Flowers and Tai Bierria got the Tigers back in the set.
- A Kate Hoerdemann kill knotted the set at 23-all, and a Flowers kill made it 24-all.
- After consecutive attack errors on both sides made it 25-all, Memphis closed out the game with kills from Kadiku and Hoerdemann for the win.
- Set Three (Memphis 28-26)
- The set was close throughout with the largest lead three points. The game had 16 ties and eight lead changes
- There were four ties in the first 20 points, with the last coming at 10-all.
- Louisiana Monroe pushed out to a 13-10 advantage only to see Memphis answer with a 7-1 spurt for a 17-14 lead.
- The Warhawks responded and took a 21-18 lead on a 7-1 run of their own.
- Memphis climbed back into the set and tied it at 21-all. The 21-all tie was the first of six in the final 13 points.
- A Hoerdemann kill gave Memphis a set and match point at 25-24, but the Warhawks fought back to take a 26-25 advantage and had set point on their serve.
- The Tigers, however, closed the set and match with the final three points – two coming on Flowers' kills – for the final 28-26 victory.
