Volleyball Falls In Five To Eastern Illinois Saturday

CHARLESTON, Ill. – University of Memphis freshman Hannah Flowers had a match-high 16 kills and sophomore Tai Bierria added a double-double of 14 kills and 10 digs, but the Tigers fell short in a narrow 3-2 setback to host Eastern Illinois Saturday.
The match was part of the Eastern Illinois Panther Invitational. The Tigers play a second-straight match against Green Bay.
Memphis falls to 0-2 on the young season. Eastern Illinois improves to 1-1.

Tigers Tidbits
- Freshman Hannah Flowers posted double-digit kills for a second-straight match. She had 14 in Friday's match vs. Bradley
- Senior Faith Myers recorded her 17th career double-double with 34 assists and 14 digs. It was her second double-double in as many matches this season.
- Myers' 34-assists performance was her best since she handed out 43 vs. Cincinnati Nov. 11, 2015 (sophomore season).
- For the second-consecutive match, freshman Alyssa Kronberg had 20-plus digs. She collected 23 vs. Eastern Illinois after a 26-digs performance in Friday's season opener.
- Tai Bierria logged her third career double-double with her 14 kills and 10 digs. Her 14 kills tied a career-high.

How It Happened
- Overall Match
- Match was the Tigers' first five-setter of the season.
- The match had to extra in three of the five sets, with two won by Memphis. The Tigers took the first (26-24) and third (29-27) in extras. Eastern Illinois wrapped up the match in extras (17-15) in the fifth.
- Match had 55 ties and 23 lead changes. The last three sets had double-digits in ties with 18 in the third, 13 in the fourth and 12 in the fifth.
- Set One (Memphis 26-24)
- Although only a little breathing room, Eastern Illinois held a lead through much of the opening set.
- The Panthers' largest lead was three points eight times, with the last coming at 21-18 on a Katie Sommer's kill.
- Memphis responded with three-straight points, one on a Tai Bierria kill, to knot the score at 21-all.
- Eastern Illinois held one-point leads at 22-21 and 23-22, but a Kelsey Walter kill and a Panthers error gave the Tigers their first lead of the set at 24-23.
- Brianna Kadiku closed the first set with a kill for the Memphis win.
- Set Two (Eastern Illinois 25-14)
- Eastern Illinois ran out to a 10-4 advantage and never looked back.
- The closest the Tigers got was within five at 10-5.
- Memphis' only lead in the set was 1-0.
- Set Three (Memphis 29-27)
- The Panthers continued strong in the third set and held an 8-6 lead.
- Memphis tied the set at 8-all on a Kate Hoerdemann-Brianna Kadiku block.
- From there, the match was tied six more times, with the last time in this stretch at 16-all.
- Eastern Illinois jumped out to a 19-16 advantage, but Memphis answered with three-straight – powered by kills from Hoerdemann and Kadiku – to knot the score at 19-all.
