"UAB has a new coach this year and we don't really know what to expect," said head coach Brooks Monaghan. "They are always a solid program and there isn't anyone on our schedule that we can afford to take lightly. We expect a tough match and are looking forward to it."
Memphis opened up the season with a pair of 3-0 shutouts against Samford and Little Rock. The shutout victories and eight saves led to goalkeeper Rachel Ashworth Shepard earning American Athletic Conference Goalkeeper of the Week honors as well as the Tigers jumping into the Top 25 in the TopDrawerSoccer poll.
Memphis, the AAC preseason favorite, is also receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll.
Junior forward Elizabeth Woerner was named to the league's weekly honor roll after she scored two goals in the opener against Samford. The multiple-goal match was the third of her career. Clarissa Larisey, Jessica Lisi, Marie Levasseur, and Mikayla Morton also scored this past weekend for Memphis.
The Match-Up
All-time against the Blazers, Memphis is 11-9-1 including wins in nine of the last 11 match-ups. Sunday's match will be the first home contest against UAB since 2010 when the Tigers won by a score of 2-1.
Memphis has won the last four meetings against the Blazers which is highlighted by three-straight shutouts in 2011, 2012, and 2015. The 1-0 victory over UAB in 2015 featured redshirt-senior Necee Jennings' first goal scored of her Memphis career.
With being former foes in Conference USA, Memphis has played UAB in more matches than any other Tiger opponent in program history.
A Look At UAB
UAB comes into the weekend with a 2-0 record after notching wins against Georgia State and Jackson State. It's the first time since 2014 that the Blazers opened up the season with two consecutive wins. The Blazers, however, will play in a match Friday evening at UT Martin before traveling to Memphis.
Rachel Green scored the lone goal and Kelsey Daugherty tallied her fourth career shutout to lift the Blazers to a 1-0 victory over Georgia State in the season opener. Two days later, Betsy Ornelas tallied two goals and one assist as UAB downed Jackson State 5-0 for its first road win of the season. Daugherty was tabbed as the Conference USA Goalkeeper of the Week.
UAB was selected 14th in the C-USA Preseason Poll after finishing last season with a 4-12-3 overall record. The Blazers are under the direction of Erica Demers who was named the third head coach in UAB women's soccer history this past May.
