WEST POINT, Miss. - On a day in which the opening round was moved and later shortened because of large amounts of rainfall the night earlier, the Memphis Tigers carded an opening-round 298 to stand in a three-way tie for 13th overall in the field.
Memphis' 298 is tied with South Alabama and Louisiana, and are just five strokes out of ninth place, with Kansas State (293), Southern Miss (295), Louisiana Tech (296), and Rice (297) all standing just ahead of the Tigers.
Leading the way for the Tigers on the opening day on the par-72, 7,088-yard course was the duo of JC Campbell and Sydney Chung who each carded a 74 (+2), while Colin Dubnik and Kevin Lee each shot a 75 (+3) on the balanced Memphis squad. Nick Giles, playing in his first match of the spring season, carded a 78 for the team's fifth score.
The squad opened play on the 10th hole for the day, and Campbell started out quickly with a birdie on the par-five 10th hole. He struggled over the next six holes with three pars, a bogey and two double-bogeys to put him at four strokes over par after seven total holes on the day.Â
Campbell finished strong, with a birdie and a par to close out his front nine, and an overall one stroke under par over the back nine with two birdies, a bogey, and six pars, to finish the day at two strokes over par, tying for 33rd in the strong field.
Chung started his day with four consecutive pars before he had a bogey in three of his next five holes; however, a birdie in that mix mitigated the damage, as the senior went into the turn two strokes over par.
A double-bogey on the par-four first hole pushed him to four strokes over; however, Chung closed strong with two birdies and six pars to close his second set of nine holes at even par, and at +2 for the day, also tying for 33rd in the field.
Dubnik started and closed his round with a bang, opening the day with a birdie on the 10th hole of the course; however, four pars and four above-par scores sent the freshman into the turn five strokes over par.
On his back nine, Dubnik opened with a par, birdie, and a par, cutting his score to four strokes over par, as he followed with a bogey, birdie, and bogey to settle back at five strokes over par. Two pars followed, before he recorded an eagle on the par-five ninth hole, dropping him to two strokes under par for the back nine and +3 for the day, which is tied for 47th place overall.
Lee opened the day with a par and a birdie; however, he closed his front nine with five bogeys, taking his front nine score to four strokes over par.
On his back nine, he was the model of consistency, with eight pars and a birdie, closing the back nine at a stroke under par, and at three strokes over par for the round, tying for 47th.
Giles, playing for the first time since the fall season, opened the day with back-to-back pars before recording two bogeys in his next three holes. A birdie on his seventh hole of the day dropped him back to one stroke over par, before a bogey on his ninth hole pushed him to two strokes over par.
He struggled out of the gate in the back nine, with three bogeys, four pars, and a double bogey saw him jump to seven strokes over par; however, he closed strong with a birdie on the par-five ninth hole to end the day at six strokes over par, tied for 76th overall.
