Mar 07, 2017 | Men's Tennis
Junior is off to a 9-0 start in dual season singles and moved to #78 in this week's rankings.
MEMPHIS – Junior men's tennis player Andrew Watson was named the American Athletic Conference men's tennis player of the week on Tuesday after helping the Tigers to a win over number 18 ranked Cornell, Sunday. Watson went 2-0 in singles last weekend and 3-0 in doubles play, including a 6-3 win at one doubles that sealed the doubles point for the Tigers against Cornell.
Watson is off to a perfect 9-0 start in dual season singles this spring. He is 2-0 at one singles and 7-0 at two and climbed to number 78 in the country in this week's Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings.
"Andrew's been playing well," Associate Head Coach Chris Doerr said. "He had a tough fall on paper, but we added some things to his game that has helped him in the spring and will help him down the road as he looks at becoming a pro after college."
Watson and his teammates are back on the road this weekend, playing a pair of non-conference matches in Stillwater, Okla. On Friday, Memphis will square off against #4 ranked Oklahoma State at 2 p.m. The Tigers will then face San Diego State in a neutral site match on Saturday at noon.
Watson is the second Tiger in as many weeks to receive the conference's weekly award. Ryan Peniston received the award last week.
Memphis is next home on Wednesday, Mar. 15th. The Tigers will open American Athletic Conference play against Temple at noon on that Wednesday.
