Men's Golf Tees Up for First Spring Event on Monday

BLUFFTON, S.C. - Back after a growing fall season, the Memphis men's golf squad tees it up for the first time in the spring season on Monday morning in the first round of the Colleton River Collegiate hosted by Michigan State University.

FALL SEASON

The Memphis fall season was one of ups and downs; however, a big plus for the squad was senior Sydney Chung, who averaged 73.7 strokes per round, including a top-20 finish. Two other top-20 finishes during the fall season came from JC Campbell - who shot an average round of 77.6 - and Nick Giles - whose average fall round was 75.7.

LAST TIME OUT

University of Memphis senior Sydney Chung shot a one-under 72 in the final round of the East Bay Deli Classic at Kiawah, placing in a tie for eighth overall in the final event of the 2016-17 fall season.

Chung birdied his third hole of the day, and followed with pars on every remaining hole.

The Tigers finished the tournament with an 894, good for seventh place in the field of 22 teams, and just behind Lipscomb (893), and Coastal Carolina (892).

After pars on his first two holes, Chung birdied the par-four sixth hole. By recording a par on his remaining holes, he finished with the top score in his tee group of four players, and finished in a tie for eighth place in the deep field. Only three others in the tournament had a better final score.

Chase Harris had a rough start to his day, after a par to start he hit a six-hole stretch in which he had two bogeys, a double bogey, and a quadruple bogey, putting him at eight strokes over par seven holes into the final round. Despite the rocky start, he rebounded well, going even par over the remaining 11 holes, including birdies on the par-five 13th hole and the par-three 16th holes. For his efforts in the tournament, his tied for 48th in the field.

JC Campbell also had a below average start, with sitting at eight strokes over par with five holes to play; however, he closed very strong with three birdies and two pars over his final five holes to drop his agregate score to five strokes over par, and 13 over for the tournament as he placed in a tie for 53rd overall.

Freshman Nick Giles opened his final round of the fall season with five straight pars, but could not keep up the strong play, as he had only one birdie - on the par-four 17th hole, as he finished his round with a 79, and a three-round score of 229, which was tied with Campbell for 53rd place in the field.

Playing in just his second tournament this season, Eithel McGowen opened strong, as he was one stroke under par after five holes, and one over through 13, before a bogey and double bogey put him at four over par for the day, and 15 over for the tournament, which tied for 69th overall.
