PALM CITY, Fla. - The Memphis Tigers got strong rounds from Sydney Chung and Eithel McGowen, as the team shot eight strokes better than their opening day, and stand in 14th place at the strong Valspar Collegiate.
Of the 13 teams standing in front of the Tigers, 10 are ranked inside of the GolfStat Top-50, on the par-71, 7,114-yard Floridian Golf Course.
Chung and McGowen each finished the day with a one-over 72, while JC Campbell carded a six-over 77, Chase Harris an eight-over 79, and Colin Dubnik a 10-over 81.
For the final day, the Tigers tee off on the 10th hole, led off by Dubnik (8:21 a.m. CT), Harris (8:30 a.m.), Campbell (8:39 a.m.), McGowen (8:48 a.m.), and Chung (8:57 a.m.).
Chung opened his round strong, with a birdie on his first hole, the par-four, 401-yard 10th hole of the course. He followed with six consecutive birdies, before he hit his only speed bump on the strong round. In back-to-back holes he carded a double- and triple-bogey, turning the senior's aggregate score from -1 to +4.
He turned his round back around with three pars following the turn, and then ran off a stretch of four birdies over five holes to push him back to even par. A bogey on his final hole of the day pushed him back to one stroke over par on the day, and eight strokes over par for the tournament, tying for 46th in the field through two rounds.
McGowen was at or under par for the first 11 holes of the day, as he opened his round with three consecutive pars, before birdying the par-five, 529-yard 13th hole. After two more pars a bogey dropped him to even par.
McGowen answered back two holes later when he holed-out from over 200 yards for an eagle-2 on the par-four, 493-yard 18th hole. He followed with a double-bogey to put him at even par, before a bogey two holes later put him at one stroke over par, his first time in the round to be above par. A birdie on the following hole, a 182-yard par-three put him back at even par, and he closed the round with four pars and a bogey to finish a stroke over par for the round.
Campbell opened his day with four consecutive pars, and over a six-hole span had a double bogey, birdie, bogey, par, and double-bogey. Through that stretch he sat five strokes over par, before righting the ship over the final eight holes including a birdie on the 301-yard par-four sixth hole, finishing the day six strokes over par, and tied for 53rd overall through the two rounds.
Harris stood at even par through the first six holes including a bogey and a birdie on the par-five 529-yard 13th hole. Over the final 12 holes he had six pars, four bogeys, and a pair of double bogeys to card the eight-over 79, as his +14 two-day aggregate has him tied for 62nd in the field.
Dubnik was the team's final finisher for the tournament, and had two rough stretches through the 18 holes, heading into the turn, and heading into the clubhouse. He was at one stroke over par through the first six holes, including a birdie on the par-five 13th hole; however, back-to-back double bogeys and a bogey pushed him to six strokes over par at the turn. On the back nine he opened with a birdie on the par-four, 441-yard first hole, before five bogeys and three pars closed the round for the freshman.
