Tigers Fall in Tournament Opener 84-54

HARTFORD, Conn. - The Memphis Tigers capped play in the American Athletic Conference tournament on Friday evening, as an 18-0 UCF run in the middle of the first half turned a six-point Memphis lead into a 12-point Knight advantage, as the Tigers eventually fell 84-54.
Dedric Lawson scored a team-high 12 points while pulling down nine rebounds in the loss. Jeremiah Martin scored 11 with four rebounds and four assists while K.J. Lawson scored 10 points with three rebounds and three assists.
The Tigers had 12 assists in the game against just 10 turnovers, while adding five steals - two from Martin. Memphis made 19-of-60 shots from the field (31.7 percent) and 4-of-17 from long range (23.5 percent).
UCF was 31-of-57 from the field in the game (54.4 percent), and 14-of-26 (53.8 percent) from beyond the arc. During its run UCF hit 6-of-7 shots from the field, and made 55.2 percent of its shots in the first half.
Memphis jumped out quickly to start the game, running off a 10-2 run including four points from K.J. Lawson, four from Jimario Rivers and a lay-in from Martin to push ahead 10-4, capped by a thunderous Rivers dunk.
UCF started to chip away at the advantage, and made 6-of-7 shots, including four straight three-pointers to turn the six-point deficit into a 12-point advantage on the back of the 18-0 run.
The Knights - which made 16-of-29 shots in the first half - would not trail again in the game, pushing the lead to as many as 21 before the Tigers scored the final four points of the half on two Dedric Lawson free throws and a Crawford dunk.
UCF scored 11 of the first 12 points of the second half to lead by 27 five minutes into the second half. The Knight lead grew to as many as 33 before settling at 30 after a Jonathan Bins three-pointer.
